What Is
Permanent Makeup Removal?

Permanent makeup includes any cosmetic pigment deposited into the skin, most often on the face or head. Microblading, powder brows, ombre brows, permanent eyeliner, scalp micropigmentation, and cosmetic freckle tattoos all fall under this category.

These pigments were designed to last. But styles change, artists vary in skill, and ink shifts color over time. What looked perfect two years ago can look faded, orange, uneven, or just wrong today.

Permanent makeup removal is the process of completely removing or selectively correcting these cosmetic tattoos so your skin returns to its natural state, ready for a fresh application or simply free of ink entirely.

Most permanent makeup removal is complete in just 2 sessions.

How inkOUT® Permanent Makeup Removal Works Differently

Most people assume laser is the only option for removing permanent makeup. Here's why that's a problem.

Laser removal works by targeting pigment with light energy. But the pigments used in permanent makeup often contain iron oxide compounds that react unpredictably to laser wavelengths. Instead of breaking down, these pigments can darken, turning your brows rusty brown or black, a change that the laser itself cannot reverse.

Laser can darken cosmetic tattoo pigments, making them untreatable by further laser sessions, according to FDA, Tattoo Removal: Options and Results.

inkOUT® works completely differently. Instead of targeting pigment with light, inkOUT® uses precision dermabrasion and a 100% natural solution (TEPRsol®) to disrupt the ink at the surface level. Your body's natural healing response then expels the ink through the skin. You can literally see the pigment leaving as the treated area heals.

No heat. No light energy. No chemical reaction with your pigment. Our TEPRderm® technology pulls ink up and out through your skin via crusting. Ink sloughs off during the healing process, which means there is no internal absorption.

Permanent Makeup Removal: Two Treatment Options

COMPLETE PERMANENT MAKEUP REMOVAL

Full pigment removal across the entire treated area. Ink is expelled through the skin's surface via the body's natural healing process. No residual color. No unnatural shadow. Skin returns to a fresh, healthy baseline, ready for a new application if you choose.

Timeline: Typically 2 sessions, 5-8 months total, sessions spaced 8-12 weeks apart

PARTIAL REMOVAL AND SHAPE CORRECTION

Only want to fix part of your brows? inkOUT® can selectively remove just the sections that need correction: the tail, one arch, the edges, or uneven areas, without disturbing the rest. This level of precision is not possible with laser, which cannot isolate specific areas without risking the surrounding tissue.

Timeline: Typically 1-2 sessions depending on correction goals, 3-6 months before new microblading reapplication, correction of shape, edges, color, or full brow area

Laser vs. inkOUT® for Permanent Makeup Removal

inkOUT®
Laser
Residual color
No residual color. Clean result.
Orange or rusty brown shadow often remains
Hair follicles
No heat, no melanin targeting. Follicles preserved. Research shows TEPR®’s controlled dermabrasion activates biological pathways associated with hair follicle health.
Laser energy targets melanin, risking thinning or loss of brow hair
Pigment darkening
No light energy. No chemical reaction with pigment compounds.
Iron oxide compounds in permanent makeup ink can darken permanently when exposed to laser
Selective correction
Precise brow template enables targeted edge and shape correction
Cannot isolate specific areas without risk to surrounding tissue

Laser often exposes the warm base pigments in permanent makeup ink, leaving an orange or brown shadow that the laser cannot remove. Once this pigment is exposed, it becomes laser-resistant, creating the common "rusty" brow outcome, according to Anderson et al., Archives of Dermatology (1993) and Ross et al., Archives of Dermatology (2001).

Laser wavelengths also fall within melanin's absorption spectrum. That means eyebrow hair competes directly with tattoo ink for laser energy, putting follicles at documented risk of permanent thinning, according to Marwah et al., Indian Dermatology Online Journal (2021).

Research shows that controlled dermabrasion, the same type of precision wounding used in the TEPR® process, activates biological pathways associated with hair follicle health. Laser threatens your brow hair. inkOUT®'s natural healing process supports it, according to Ito et al., Nature (2007).

inkOUT® uses precision dermabrasion, not light energy. No heat. No chemical reaction with pigment compounds. No follicle risk.

Your Healing Journey
and Aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential for optimal healing and the best possible results. Your inkOUT® provider will walk you through everything in person, but here's what to expect after each permanent makeup removal session.

Immediately After Treatment
Your provider applies a non-stick bandage. Leave it on for exactly 1 hour. After removing it, replace with dry, loose weave gauze (4x4 surgical sponges). Keep the area covered with gauze until the crusting layer sloughs off naturally.
Week 1: Crusting Forms
Treated area forms a crusting layer. Keep the area dry and covered with gauze. Avoid getting the treated area wet. No swimming, saunas, or steam rooms.
Weeks 2-3: Ink Sloughs Off
Ink visibly leaves through the skin's surface as the crusting layer sloughs off (typically 10-14 days for eyebrows, 10-21 days for other facial areas). Keep the area covered with gauze throughout this phase. Do not pick. The crusting layer contains the ink being expelled. Picking disrupts the process and can affect results.
Weeks 4-8: Hydration and Protection
Once all crusting has naturally fallen off, begin the hydration protocol provided by your technician. This supports skin recovery and prepares the area for your next session or for new permanent makeup application. Protect the treated area from direct sunlight. Apply sunscreen once the skin has fully healed.
Weeks 8-12: Full Healing Complete
Skin is ready for the next session evaluation or new permanent makeup application.
